SAN FRANCISCO, CA (July 15, 2011) – Shareholders Garry Mathiason and Robert Millman of Littler Mendelson, P.C. (Littler), the nation’s largest employment and labor law firm representing management, have been recognized among the top labor and employment lawyers in California by the Los Angeles and San Francisco Daily Journals, the state’s largest legal news providers. Mathiason is chairman of the Board of Directors and a senior shareholder at Littler, and Millman is immediate past firm Chairman and founding shareholder of the firm’s Los Angeles office.
The Daily Journals’ annual list recognizes California-based attorneys who have made a significant impact in the area of labor law.
“On behalf of the entire firm, I extend our congratulations to Garry and Bob for this honor,” said Marko Mrkonich, president and managing director of the firm. “Their ongoing contributions to the firm and to the profession continue to land them among the top echelon of labor and employment attorneys.”
Key considerations for Mathiason’s honor included his work as lead attorney in Granite Rock Co. v. International Brotherhood of Teamsters, et al. On June 24, 2010, in a landmark 7-2 decision, the Supreme Court ruled that the dispute over a collective bargaining agreement’s formation date was a matter for the District Court, not an arbitrator, to resolve. In deciding the case, the Court overturned a contrary ruling of the Ninth Circuit and emphasized that whether parties have agreed to arbitrate a particular dispute is typically an issue for judicial determination.
Millman continues to rank on the Daily Journals’ list of top labor and employment lawyers where he has earned a spot for the past three years. This year, he was recognized for serving as lead counsel in successful labor contracts negotiations for one of the state’s leading acute healthcare chains, as well one of the nation’s largest operators of acute care hospital facilities. He is lead counsel in a multi-million dollar lawsuit filed against the international Brotherhood of Teamsters in litigation brought on behalf of one the nation's largest trucking companies.
