CHICAGO, IL (November 22, 2010) – Littler Mendelson, P.C. (Littler), the nation's largest employment and labor law firm representing management, announced today that Barry Hartstein, a shareholder in the firm's Chicago office, has received Cornell University's prestigious "Judge William B. Groat Alumni Award" for his work in labor and employment law. The award was established in 1971 by Cornell's Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR) School in tribute to the distinguished justice, who served on the New York State Supreme Court, Eleventh Judicial District.
"I'm very pleased to announce that Barry Hartstein is the 2011 Groat prize winner," said Harry Katz, dean of the ILR School, in a video statement. "We all look forward to celebrating an appropriate award for a wonderful alumnus of the ILR School and a great contributor to our field."
The Groat award recognizes those who have made significant achievements in the field of industrial relations, including all aspects of labor relations and human resources management in the sectors of labor unions, management, neutrals, government service, and academe. Also considered are those who have provided service to the ILR School and participated in alumni activities.
Hartstein has earned respect not only for his work as a labor and employment attorney, but also his contributions as an alumnus of the ILR School. He is a past president of the ILR Alumni Association, and currently serves on the ILR School's Advisory Council and Board of Directors for the school's Scheinman Institute on Conflict Resolution.

Hartstein joined Littler's Chicago office in August 2010. Over the course of his career spanning more than 30 years, he has earned a strong national reputation for his work on behalf of employers, assisting them in a wide range of employment law matters. In addition, he is an experienced litigator who has defended employers nationwide in individual and class action claims as well as in wage and hour collective actions. He writes on workplace issues and frequently is invited to speak on the latest trends and most pressing concerns.
Hartstein received his J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law and his undergraduate degree from Cornell University's ILR School. He is admitted to practice in the Illinois and California state bars.
